My childhood was spent in North Wales in a close knit community in the countryside. I live with my parents and two younger siblings. My father worked for many years as a teacher and still works in education, my mother worked in the media for many years and is now a Welsh language tutor for adults.
During my upbringing in Wales I experienced two different languages and two contrasting cultures and this inspired me to learn more about the world beyond my own country. The Welsh culture revolves heavily around the language and performing, over the years I have participated in many Eisteddfod’s (a Welsh culture festival), singing, acting, dancing and reciting poetry. At the age of seven I won the competition for singing. I also attended a drama school for three years where I had the opportunity to perform in the Royal Albert Hall.
The decision to study Spanish has been one of the best decisions I have ever made as I have become
acutely aware of many Spanish speaking countries and their cultures. Consequently the time has
come that I must enhance my education by living and learning outside of the class room. I would
greatly appreciate the opportunity to teach English in Argentina as, ironically, it offers the chance to
experience the only other country in the world where the Welsh language is spoken in any numbers
by the indigenous population.

As for my 2015, I got to travel to New Orleans, Puerto Rico, and Washington DC, and perhaps most importantly, earn TESOL certification and use it down in Argentina for the past five months, not to mention seeing some cool sites and meeting some great people.
I have lived in Bristol, in the south west of the UK all my life. Bristol is a great city to grow up in, as it is reasonably small and full of culture and I have only one sister who is also at university.
The skills at which I am best are those involving people, for example communication. I am confident talking to and working with many types of people, this skill has definitely improved since working during my gap year where I had to meet and inform lots of people daily. I think I am also patient, especially with children, as I don’t panic very easily and I am also enthusiastic. I also think organisation is a key skill; I have become a more organised person through my time spent at the Army Officer Training Corps.
Hello, hello!
First and foremost, I want to welcome you all (whether it’s back or for the first time).
As I’m sure you may be wondering, my name is Martina Scheuermann, and, yes, I’m “The American”.
What I call “home” is a few thousand kilometers away from here. I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, which is located in the southern part of the USA (next to Texas, northwest of Disney World and very far south of New York). I love travelling and cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have found my way to Argentina. Just like it’s the first time for many of our students to be taught by a “native speaker,” it’s my first time being in this beautiful country.
Working at the OK Institute is absolutely wonderful. It’s so wonderful that I decided to stay until December, as opposed to leaving in July! The energy here is electric, and the family we share is extraordinarily welcoming to all. Our students are spectacular, and I come to work every day looking forward to seeing their faces. With them and our staff, there’s never a class without a laugh or a day without learning something new.
I hope we all can continue to take advantage of this brilliant opportunity in the coming months and want to say thanks to everyone for making it so special thus far. As always, please feel free to talk to me – in class, on the streets or even on Facebook.
Until later, have a good day!!
